Jordan Conroy named on Rugby Sevens team for European Games
Tullamore's Jordan Conroy is bidding to become a two-time Olympian after he was named today (Wednesday) on The Ireland men's Sevens squad to contest the upcoming European Games in Krakow, with a view to securing a place at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Conroy plays rugby with Athlone-based Buccaneers RC, and this is his second time to be vying for Olympic honours after he was named on the Irish rugby squad which competed in Tokyo 2020.
Irish head coach, James Topping's side are hoping to join the Irish women's squad in Paris next year. The Irish women made history by qualifying for their very first Olympics courtesy of their 5th place finish in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in May.
James Topping selected an unchanged 13-player squad for the trip to Krakow in Poland, where the European Games begin on Wedneday of next week, June 21.
12 teams will battle it out in Poland to book their place in Paris 2024, and the Irish men's squad will be hoping to continue to make history by achieving back-to-back Olympic qualification.
The team secured their spot at the European Games with a strong performance in Portugal to win the Algarve Sevens title.
Rugby Sevens at the European Games takes place at the Henryk Reyman Stadium in Krakow, beginning with the Pool draw on Sunday, 25th June.
