Moore United chase double
Moore United will be aiming for an historic double when they meet Castlerea Celtic in the final of the RDFL Joe's Bar Challenge Cup final in Lecarrow, Sunday (2pm).
Having ended a league title famine of over 22 years recently, Moore Utd will now be aiming to banish an almost equal wait to taste cup final glory as it was the 2001/2002 season when they last brought home the Roscommon showpiece cup trophy.
Back then they overcame local rivals Skyvalley Rovers in a penalty shoot out following a replay and extra time. Moore Utd were last in the final in 2018/19 when they were beaten by St Peter's of Athlone.
Under the management team of Tommy Naughton and Declan Duffy, Moore were chased all they way in the league this season by Boyle Celtic, who they finally overcame 1-0 in Boyle in what was effectively a title deciding league game.
The North Roscommon side were also put to the sword in the semi final of the cup (2-1), and now it is another team from the north of the county that stand in their way in the cup decider, in the shape of Castlerea Celtic.
Castlerea Celtic have won the Roscommon Challenge Cup on seven previous occasions, most recently in 2016/17.
Managed by Giles McDonagh, Castlerea have experienced players in the likes of Ronan Curran and Darren Clabby, the latter of whom is their leading scorer with nine goals.
The Moore Utd squad for the game on Sunday is goalkeepers Adam McManus, Paddy Reilly; defenders: Jason Ryan, James Byrne, Graham Pettit, Shane Pettit, Emmet Kenny; midfielders: Kevin Kenny, Rian Carpenter, Shane Dunning, Liam Ryan, Paul Kelly, Mark Gannon, Ian Harney Forwards: Charles Nevin, Jack Nevin, Josh Lennon, Mark Lennon, Davy Griffin.
