Rafa Monteiro, Mullingar Minotaurs, is tackled during the game against Craigavon Cowboys.

Winning start to season for Westmeath Minotaurs

The Westmeath Minotaurs opened their first season of top division American football with a comprehensive 38-0 victory over the Criagavon Cowboys in Portadown.

The scores on the day came from Athlone man Shaun Dalton, Mayo native Alan Campbell and Tyrellspass rookie Cathal Dunne.

The Minotaurs started slowly with a number of costly penalties stalling drives. However, from the half onwards, there was only going to be one outcome.

The Minotaurs moved through the gears efficiently to dispatch the Cowboys through the running game, led by Rafa Monteiro, and through the air via the arm of Joe Kinahan. The defence completely snuffed out any chance of a Cowboys comeback with great intensity in the tackle.

Head coach Bill Dougherty was delighted with the performance, calling it one of the best he's seen since being at the helm.

Next up is an away trip to Dublin to face the South Dublin Panthers.

The Minotaurs train in Mullingar Rugby Club every Sunday from 10am-12pm. New players always welcome.
