Local canal group receives donation of water safety aids from Athlone Credit Union

Athlone Credit Union recently sponsored the purchase of twelve buoyancy aids or personal flotation devices for the Athlone Canal Heritage Committee as part of the Community Support Fund.

The buoyancy aids will give the committee members protection while working in and around the canal. The committee made up of a number of CE scheme workers work tirelessly on canal bank enhancement and improving the watercourse.

Speaking at the handover of the buoyancy aids, CEO of Athlone Credit Union, Michael Evans, said: “The primary objective of the community support fund is to support the development and delivery of worthwhile projects to the benefit of members and the local community in the Athlone common bond area.

"We were delighted to support Athlone Canal Heritage Committees request; they carry out such valued work along the canal banks and waterways. As a volunteer led group, we know that this sponsorship will be a welcome support and ensure that they can continue the important work they do safely in the community.”
