ACC students reach Applied Maths quiz national final
Athlone Community College recently hosted the IAMTA Senior Applied Maths Quiz.
5th and 6th year Applied Maths students teamed up from St. Finian's College Mullingar, Moate Community School, Garbally College Ballinasloe and Athlone Community College to compete in teams of three.
ACC had a phenomenal night, with scores that placed its teams 1st and 2nd, with 3 of the teams battling it out in a tiebreak for 3rd. Extraordinarily, 14 teams from ACC competed, (42 Applied Maths students) a new IAMTA record for regional participation from any one school. This goes to show the strength of Applied Maths in ACC and the truly exceptional students.
In 1st place was Bryan Armstrong (6th year), Leo O'Connell (6th year) and Conor Doran (5th year).
In 2nd place was Charlie Flynn (5th year), Josh Oyiki (6th year) and Clodagh O'Brien (6th year)
In 3rd place (winning the tiebreak) was the team of John Maloney (6th year), Aoife Ni Leochain (5th year) and Sean Daniel (6th year).
The 1st and 2nd team will compete in the IAMTA National Final on Saturday, March 25, after qualifying with top scores. The winning team achieved the second best regional score in all of Ireland. The ACC Junior team which came 1st in the Midlands in January will compete in the Junior IAMTA National Final on the same day. This is on the back of the Senior Maths team winning the IMTA Midlands regional competition and scoring so strongly in the National final last weekend.
