Hilarious Jimmy Keary play to be staged in Moore

Moore & Clonfad Drama Society is taking to the stage with their 2023 production of 'For Better, For Worse', the hilarious comedy from the pen of Jimmy Keary from Friday, March 17 to Sunday, March 19 inclusive at 8pm.

Westmeath's Jimmy Keary is a well-known playwright whose comedy plays have been staged all over Ireland. Tickets are available at the door on the night.

The story revolves around the trials and tribulations of middle-aged farmer Gabriel Foley, who has recently got married, played by stalwart of the group Tom Costello, and the complications of the many women in his life all making their own demands on poor Gabriel. These include his new wife Chrissie who is somewhat disillusioned and driven to take drastic actions to make Gabriel see how unhappy she is with her lot. Chrissie is ably portrayed by Finola O’Brien.

In the midst of this, we meet Miriam Maguire who is a forward-thinking, liberal woman in her forties who sets her sights on Gabriel. She is played by Aoife Hibbitt in her second role with the group.

Add to this delicate yet complicated situation Gabriel’s belligerent mother played by the inimitable actress Carmel Scott, making all kinds of demands on both Gabriel and Chrissie.

Into the mix we also have Aggie’s sister Lucy, who has a somewhat twisted view of her poor nephew, played by the longstanding member of the group Maura O’Brien alongside her gossipy friend Lily McGinty played by Bernie Greene, who sees an opportunity to make some money betting on the longevity of the Foley marriage. Gabriel’s friend Liam, played by the great comic actor Niall Flynn, does nothing to make life easy for Gabriel so in an effort to sort out his complex problems.

Gabriel then enlists the help of psychologist Mr Crispin Tweed whose role is given very dramatic effect by Padraig Egan. Mr Tweed is ably supported in his work by his office manager, Ben Halpin, returning to the group after his inaugural role in last year’s production.

Moore and Clonfad Drama Group never disappoint when it comes to comedy productions with lots of onstage mayhem and comedic intrigue. This production is destined to provide more of the same.

The production this year will again benefit from the superb directing skills of Liam Curley. Liam’s association with this group is of very long standing and the group acknowledge that its success is synonymous with Liam’s particular genius, in directing comedy and his capacity to bring every modicum of fun from every character on stage and from every line in the script.

The group owe a huge debt of gratitude to all who help out with the play with a special word of thanks to the stage crew, hall committee, Community Employment Scheme and all who help out with putting this production on stage over the three-night run.

Audiences are guaranteed a belly load of laughs, this play will be just the tonic and there is nothing like a good laugh with your family and friends. Spread the word and don’t miss your chance to see 'For Better, For Worse' in the newly refurbished and very comfortable Moore Community Hall - be there early to avoid disappointment.
