Call for road safety upgrade to be prioritised at South Roscommon school
A local councillor has called for road safety improvements to be prioritised at Cornfulla National School, saying "significant investment" was needed to address concerns arising from the school's location off the busy R446 regional road.
Cllr John Naughten said he would be raising the matter at the next meeting of Roscommon County Council's Athlone Municipal District.
He will be calling for the council to write to the National Transport Authority (NTA) to seek the inclusion of Cornafulla NS in the 'Safe Routes to School' programme.
"I am seeking to have Cornafulla NS prioritised for this scheme due to the school’s location, just off a busy regional road, and the significant investment required to improve road safety around the school," said Cllr Naughten.
"The need for improved access to the school for pedestrians and cyclists is something that has been raised with me on an ongoing basis by parents travelling to the school and it is on that basis I will be asking the Council to write to the NTA," he stated.
