Businesses urged to be vigilant amid shoplifting concerns
Gardai in Athlone have advised local shop owners to “be vigilant” in the run-up to the busy Christmas shopping period amid an increase in theft from a number of retails outlets in recent weeks.
“With far more people out and about in the shops than usual, the potential for theft is much higher” pointed out a spokesperson for Athlone Gardai, who has advised all local retail outlets to remain vigilant and to take extra steps to protect their property.
Gardai have also warned of the potential for online shoppers to fall victim to scammers, and have stated that online fraudsters are becoming "more and more sophisticated all the time."
Extra Garda patrols will be in operation across all busy areas of Athlone over the Christmas and New Year period.
Anyone who is a victim of theft, or feels they may have been scammed in a fraudulent online transaction, is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station at 09064 98550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
