Motorists are being urged to take care on the roads following widespread flooding today (Wednesday) morning.

The country is under a yellow-level warning for wind and rainfall up until 9pm tonight.

In Athlone, the Ballymahon Road railway bridge, close to Newtown Medical Centre, was impassable earlier today due to flooding. Motorists coming into town were being forced to take alternative routes as a result.

By lunchtime, the flooding there had receded to an extent.

The torrential downpours also caused difficulties in Athlone train station this morning.
