PHOTOS: Heavy rainfall causes flooding in parts of Athlone
Motorists are being urged to take care on the roads following widespread flooding today (Wednesday) morning.
The country is under a yellow-level warning for wind and rainfall up until 9pm tonight.
In Athlone, the Ballymahon Road railway bridge, close to Newtown Medical Centre, was impassable earlier today due to flooding. Motorists coming into town were being forced to take alternative routes as a result.
By lunchtime, the flooding there had receded to an extent.
Major flooding was also reported in the Willow Park estate in Athlone and along the Coosan Road, close to the Corrib oil depot and the railway bridge, with motorists being encouraged to avoid the area if possible.
The torrential downpours also caused difficulties in Athlone train station this morning.
Rainfall flowed into the station, resulting in part of it having to be cordoned off while staff worked to clear the water.
