Castledaly GAA chairperson Tom Stone launches the 'Around the World Solo Relay' fundraiser alongside Calvin Farrell, John Warburton, Eimear Fitzgerald and the club's U-8 girls.

Castledaly GAA seeks support at home and abroad for ‘solo relay’

Castledaly GAA is continuing preparations of the club’s fundraising initiative for 2022, ‘Around the World Solo Relay’, which will take place on Saturday, October 22.

Castledaly GAA chairperson Tom Stone officially launched the initiative at the clubhouse last month. Tom outlined that Castledaly GAA is more than just a football team; it is a community club spanning the youngest up and coming stars, to former greats and those who built the club.

“We are continuously learning what it means to be part of a club,” said Tom, adding that participation is the most important thing.

Tom then invited members of the community based locally and the club’s wider diaspora around the world (including such places as the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Uganda and even as far away as Offaly!) to “pick up a ball and solo for Castledaly GAA”.

The final leg of the Solo Relay, which will be a combined distance of 500 kilometres, will be from Cusack Park in Mullingar to Castledaly GAA pitch (St Kieran’s GAA Park).

Representatives of all members of the community are set to take part, including underage and senior teams and Fit Club members.

“We are also delighted to announce that members of the winning teams from the Senior Championship (2008), Intermediate Championship (1994) and the Junior Championship (1983) will be soloing a leg of the relay,” said Tom.

“The money raised will allow the club to further serve our community for the coming year, from maintaining the pitches for all our players to keeping the lights on during the winter for the walking track.

“The club is looking to foster an inclusive and respectful culture and environment that promotes the health and lifelong participation of our members,” he continued.

Tom concluded by saying: “We understand that there are many demands on people’s money, so we are asking to give what you can; whether it be €1 or €100, you will receive the same welcome at the pitch of our community club, Castledaly GAA.”

You can donate to one of the many participants in person or online at https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/CastledalySoloRelay - the club will be updating its social media pages for timings on the day and hopes to receive plenty of support.
