New bridge takes shape
The second section of Athlone's new €13 million pedestrian and cycling bridge was installed this afternoon.
It is expected to be fully in place later this week when a new vista will appear on the river.
Saturday last saw the central section brought down the river by barge, from the construction compound in Wansboro Park, before it was lifted into place at the bridge site between the Radisson Hotel and the Luan Gallery.
Several people stopped on the town bridge today as work on the second section was taking place, with the modern bridge structure proving a big talking point among passersby - both local and visitors.
There will be several months of work after the bridge is put in place, with boardwalks, railings, finishes, lighting to be installed on-site prior to its expected opening next Easter.
