Documentary on Athlone pub to be shown at festival in Poland

Ann's Pub, a documentary film about Flannery's pub in Athlone, is to be screened at an upcoming film and art festival in Poland.

The 26-minute film was made in the Sean Costello Street pub between 2017 and 2019.

The work of Swiss filmmaker Thabea Furrer, it won the Short Film Prize at the Basel Film and Media Art Awards last year, and had its Irish premiere in Athlone Little Theatre at the end of April.

Ann's Pub has now been named as one of 20 short films which were chosen from submitted entries to be screened at the BNP Paribas Two Riversides Film and Art Festival.

The festival takes place from July 30 to August 7, in the towns of Kazimierz Dolny and Janowiec nad Wisłą in Eastern Poland.

The festival is popular among filmmakers, and showcases work from both Polish and international directors, with awards being announced at its closing ceremony.

The description of the film on the festival's website states that the proprietor of the pub, Ann Flannery, "spends her life behind the counter of a pub in an Irish town. But who is she really?"
