TUS hosting Student Chef of the Year competition

Ten young student chefs from third level colleges across the country will compete in the Knorr Professional Student Chef of the Year competition today at TUS Athlone.

The competition recognises the top student chefs from culinary colleges across the country.

One local student from the TUS Athlone campus, Keith Shoko will be competing.

Each student has to prepare two dishes within two hours in line with the theme 'Cook Local, Act Global.'

The young chefs must consider the environmental impact of sourcing beyond their locality by using locally sourced ingredients within 50km and use a minimum of two Knorr products.

They are also asked to consider how the dishes are prepared in terms of sustainable cooking methods.

The special guest judge this year is chef, restaurateur and author, JP McMahon. JP will be joined by Audrey Crone, Executive Chef, Unilever Food Solutions Ireland and Alex Hall, Executive Chef & Culinary Team Leader for Food at Unilever Food Solutions UK & Ireland.

The competition is open to second year students from participating catering colleges, training centres and institutes of technology across Ireland. Students must be recommended to enter by the head of their catering college, and only one student per campus can represent their college at the final.

Maria Dunne, TUS Athlone won the Chef of the Year title in 2020 at TU Dublin.
