James Crombie to speak at Athlone Photography Club event

It is always nice to make a wish, even better when it comes true. The Athlone Photography Club is delighted to welcome PPAI Photographer of the Year, for the second year running, James Crombie on Wednesday, March 9, from 7.30pm in the Shamrock Lodge, Athlone.

During the lockdowns last year, when the Athlone Photography Club scheduled and secured James' March 2022 visit, it was hoping that firstly, physical meetings would be allowed, secondly, that James would be selected Irish Press Photographer of the Year in February for the second time in a row, and finally that he would be one of the first photography clubs he would talk to after the PPAI Awards.

On February 18, the 44th annual Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) Award ceremony took place in Dublin. James Crombie, who works for Inpho Sports Photography Ireland, was named ‘Press Photographer of the Year’ and was awarded prizes in 2twoother categories; Daily Life and People - 3rd place, Sports Feature - 3rd place, Nature and the Environment - 1st place.

Paul Sherwood, current President of The PPAI, congratulated James, for retaining his title with his superb portfolio, being topped off by his iconic image of the starling murmuration.

On Wednesday, March 9. from 7.30pm, James Crombie will be presenting his photos taken during the Japanese Olympic Games, and perhaps a few surprises. He'll be there with the long established photography club, to answer questions about his career, experience and sport photography in general.

For the first time in two years, this event will also be open to the public. Liam Kidney, Athlone Photography Club Chairman, is encouraging people who are interested in attending to contact the club's secretaries, Ciara Kinnarney and Sébastien Rolland to reserve a seat at the event by emailing athlonephotographyclub@gmail.com. There will be a charge of €5 for non-members to attend, to help cover the club's expenses.

Registration will commence at 7.30pm with the talk starting at 8pm sharp.
