Athlone Little Theatre is back this March!
Athlone Little Theatre is back with a bang in March with two wonderful one-act plays, which are sure to whet the appetite of local drama fans.
For the first time since 2020, the theatre in St Mary's Place is alive with activity as the group prepares to present the powerful and poignant 'Tell me Another Story, Sing Me a Song,' by Jean Lenox Toddie, and the comedic 'Wittgenstein in the West' by Stephen Toomey from March 6 to 12 next. Booking is online only at www.athlonelittletheatre.ie
Directed by Chrissie Killian and Doreen Holloway, the first offering, 'Tell me Another Story, Sing Me a Song,' by Jean Lenox Toddie centres on a mother/daughter relationship, exploring the irritations and misunderstandings that build the walls between mothers and their female offspring – and then the love and compassion that breaks down these walls. It's a beautiful and thought-provoking portrayal of the cycle of life by the prolific US playwright, who started life as a journalist and author.
Athlone Little Theatre newcomer Michelle Kelly, who has starred in several plays in Longford, makes an impressive local debut as the mother alongside the talented Ruth Benson as the daughter, who most recently featured in our outdoor theatre offering 'Spreading the News' by Lady Gregory in Athlone Castle during the summer.
The second one-act play is the comedic 'Wittgenstein in the West' by Stephen Toomey, directed by Billy Nott. Originally a radio play, this production focuses on Ludwig Wittgenstein, the world-famous Austrian philosopher's post-war pilgrimage to the peace and quiet of Connemara to do some writing.
Looked after by local couple Din-Jo and Peig-Cait, which proves more problematic than he ever imagined as he struggles to make sense of the interaction between them and the strangeness of the language.
Scion of one of the richest families in Austria, Wittgenstein had disclaimed his rights to a share in the vast family fortune after his return from military service in the First World War. Inspired by the teachings of Leo Tolstoy, he resolved to live as simply as possible.
Michael McGlone (Wittgenstein) portrays to great effect the confusion of the professor with our particular type of English, and his interactions with local couple Din-Jo (Pat Canty) and Peig-Cait (Sinéad Waterstone) provides plenty of laughs as he grapples with this 'fish out of water' situation. The Connemara couple prove a very witty foil to his intellectual musings.
'Tell me Another Story, Sing Me a Song,' by Jean Lenox Toddie, and 'Wittgenstein in the West' by Stephen Toomey, run nightly at 8pm from March 6 to 12 next.
