Athlone Town's clash with Treaty United called off

The SSE Airtricity First Division fixture between Treaty United and Athlone Town, scheduled for tonight (Friday), has been postponed.

The Markets Fields pitch in Limerick, following an inspection this morning, was deemed unplayable and a new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

Athlone Town began their First Division campaign with a 5-2 defeat to Waterford last Friday night.

Stephen Kenny and Glen McAuley (penalty) scored the Athlone goals but they came at a stage when the outcome was well and truly decided.

On a night when Waterford lived up to their pre-season billing as favourites to lift the First Division title, it was a real baptism of fire for new Town manager Martin Russell as his team trailed 3-0 at half-time.

The visitors made it 4-0 before the hour mark, with Kenny scoring Athlone's first goal of the season on 80 minutes.

Waterford's four-goal lead was quickly restored, before McAuley completed the scoring with a penalty kick for the hosts late on. McAuley was bundled over in the box and the Town striker (one of only three starting Athlone players surviving from last season) stepped up to make no mistake from the resulting spot kick.

Waterford's goals were sored by Cian Kavanagh, Phoenix Patterson (two, one a delightful free kick), Armando Junior Quitirna and substitute Louis Britton.

Athlone Town (v Waterford): Micheál Schlingermann, Daniel Dobbin, Derek Daly, Noah Van Geenen, Andy Spain, Jackson Hulme, Stephen Kenny, Quincy Nkansah, Glen McAuley, Thomas Oluwa, Youri Habing. Subs: Oisin Duffy for Dobbin (half-time); Sami Clarke for Nkansah (61 mins); Success Edogun for Oluwa (75); Aaron Connolly for Habing (78).
