Athlone band's single praised by former Oasis guitarist

Rising Athlone indie rock band The Baines made something of a stir last week, when former Oasis guitarist Paul Arthurs gave their most recent single his seal of approval.

Arthurs, better known by the nickname Bonehead, formed an integral part of the Manchester supergroup and was a founding member.

He played rhythm guitar and helped create classic songs such as Live Forever, Wonderwall, and Champagne Supernova. Arthurs still features on-stage from time to time with Oasis singer Liam Gallagher.

Tweeting about the Athlone band last Thursday, Arthurs said he "really liked" their single, Bring It Up.

"Well done to the lads in The Baines and I wish them good luck in the future," he commented.

Arthurs added that it would be great to meet up one day with the members of The Baines, who were formed by Kevin O'Neill and Cormac Sheerin. They are assisted in their recordings by well-known local musician Alan O'Neill, who incidentally is on the verge of releasing his own debut solo album.

"Things really started to kick off for us when we released our debut single Like This Forever," said singer and co-songwriter, Kevin O'Neill.

"To be honest we didn't know what to expect when we put it out on Spotify and all the other streaming sites. But the reaction was brilliant and lots of people from Athlone got behind us, too. There's been huge interest in us in England and it's going pretty well," he added.

Fellow songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sheerin added: "We take a lot of influences from the likes of Oasis and DMAs, so to have Bonehead recognising Bring It Up was a shock... but a very nice one."

At present, the Athlone band are in the studio ahead of the release of a further single and six-track EP. Once recording has finished, said O'Neill, they can look towards live gigs in Ireland and England.
