Sheehan marks new contract with goal for Northampton
Alan Sheehan marked his return from injury - and the signing of a new contract - by scoring in Northampton Town's 3-1 win over Gillingham last night (Tuesday).
Goals from Sam Hoskins (penalty) and Danny Rose gave Northampton a 2-1 lead at half-time, with Kyle Dempsey on target for visitors Gillingham.
Early in the second half, Sheehan's free kick found the bottom corner of the Gillingham net to restore the Cobblers' two goal lead. And they went on to secure the three points in the League 1 clash.
Athlone native Sheehan joined Northampton in October on a short term contract, and he will stay at the PTS Academy Stadium until at least the end of the current season.
The experienced defender, who previously captained Luton Town to back to back promotions to the Championship, has made nearly 450 career appearances.
In recent weeks Sheehan has been taking on a player/coach role with Northampton, whose manager is Keith Curle, and Sheehan's role will continue.
"Alan has had a big impact at the club since his arrival," said Curle recently.
"His experience, his knowledge and his leadership have all added to the squad, and we have invited him to join the coaching staff over the last weeks. But he also has a key role as a player. I don't think it is any co-incidence that some of our best results over the last couple of months have come with Alan in the side, and he has helped us to a number of clean sheets in that time. We have missed his presence on the field in the last few games, but we are delighted he will remain with us for the rest of the season," Curle added.
Northampton currently lie 19th of the 24 teams in League 1.
