Roscommon mourns loss of first U21 All-Ireland winning captain
The GAA community in Roscommon is mourning the loss of Colm Shine, captain of the county's first All-Ireland U21 football title in 1966, who passed away this week.
Coming up against Kildare, Shine led the team to a one point victory over favourites Kildare, with the final score coming to 2-10 to 1-12. Goal scorers on the day were Jim Finnegan and Jim Kane, and a Westmeath Independent report from the match describes Colm as among other Roscommon players who shone on the day.
Clann nan Gael, Shine’s club, took to social media to announce his passing, saying:
“It is with deep regret and sadness that Clann na nGael advise of the passing of Colm Shine.
“Colm was a well-decorated player, captaining Roscommon to U-21 All-Ireland glory in Croke Park in 1966 and winning a senior title with Clann the same year.
“Colm will be sadly missed, not only in Clann na nGael but also throughout Roscommon and the wider GAA community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
