Athlone Christmas lights switch-on goes online
Current restrictions have forced the switching on of Athlone’s Christmas lights to take place online this year.
Although the party that has taken place in the Civic Square over the past three years will not takes place, Santa will still be appearing on December 1 at 7pm to switch on the lights, which can be viewed on the Athlone Festivals and Events Project Facebook Group.
Mayor of Athlone Aengus O’Rourke said that the event has grown in popularity over the last number of years.
“Last year more than 1000 people came to watch our show and witness Santa arrive by Garda escort and switch on the lights across Athlone.
“Unfortunately, this year, due to public health guidance, and given the restrictions that are in place, we are forced to cancel our plans for an outdoor event. But that won’t stop us making an occasion of it!”
“In order to comply with public health guidelines he is not travelling with his elves this year, he said he will be on his own. We are delighted that he has chosen Athlone as one of the few places he is visiting this year,” the mayor finished.
