Athlone Boat Club seeks support for local businesses

Athlone Boat Club has called on all those involved in sporting organisations and the wider community to support local businesses as they try to stay afloat amid the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.

"As we live through uncertain times and another lockdown, the effects of Covid-19 have had a profound effect on everyone including our local businesses. Down through the years, the local businesses of Athlone have supported a variety of organisations, sports clubs, schools, and the list goes on; it is now time for all of us to give back to them," said a statement from the Athlone Boat Club committee.

The club said this is "the perfect time to step up and buy locally".

"It is more important than ever, and by doing so, we create a ripple effect that lends itself to businesses staying open, local people employed and the economy of our town strong. The members of the Athlone Boat Club are committed to lending a helping hand and we ask you to do the same," continued the club statement.

"In addition to buying locally, as part of our appreciation and thanks for all the support we have received, we are using our social medial platform to help promote businesses in Athlone.

"We are asking all organisations, sports clubs, schools, etc., to row in behind this initiative by using your social media platforms to help promote local business and indeed our town as a hub for shopping. It is our time to give back and think of them," added the club statement.

Meanwhile, Mark Henshaw, a coach with Athlone Boat Club, and Ray Lyons, club caretaker, were recently honoured by Athlone River Safety Awareness for their participation in a river safety rescue. Also honoured on the night was Kevin McCallon.

Aengus O’Rourke, Mayor of Athlone, presented Ray Lyons with his certificate, whilst Paul Donovan, President of Athlone Boat Club, presented Mark Henshaw with his certificate.
