Roscommon player tests positive for Covid-19

A member of the Roscommon senior football panel has tested positive for Covid-19.

A statement from the Roscommon County Board has confirmed the positive case and outlined the protocols now being followed.

"On receipt of instructions from the HSE in conjunction with our medical team, the members of the panel and management who have been deemed to be close contacts have now been referred for testing and have also begun their period of restricted movement," said the statement.

"These panel members and management will only re-join the panel when deemed safe to do so by the HSE.

"The senior football management and panel have at all times strictly adhered to HSE and public health guidelines," the statement continued.

The statement confirmed that Roscommon will play their Allianz Football League game against Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park as planned this Saturday.

"Roscommon GAA will be making no further comment on this matter," the statement added.

The Rossies are virtually guaranteed of promotion from Division 2 following their victory over Armagh at the Athletic Grounds last Saturday evening.

Even if Roscommon lose to Cavan, they will only miss out on promotion if Westmeath defeat Kildare in Newbridge and Armagh overcome Clare in Ennis, combined with a highly improbable swing in scoring difference.

On Saturday last, the Roscommon contingent travelled to Armagh using two buses, but it emerged that a number of players didn’t feel comfortable with this arrangement and used their own cars instead.

The Roscommon team were fed by their hosts Armagh and consumed their post-match meal in the stand at the Athletic Grounds before embarking on their trip home last Saturday night.

Roscommon County Board recently defended the circumstances surrounding a post-match meal in Boyle involving the senior footballers after a challenge match against Donegal.

Roscommon GAA insisted that the meal took place in full compliance with the Covid-19 regulations for elite sports - see story HERE
