Thirteen new COVID-19 cases in Westmeath
Thirteen new COVID-19 cases in Westmeath have been confirmed, bringing the total to 461.
Nationally, the number of cases in the country topped 20,000 for the first time after Department of Health last night announced a further 376 confirmed cases. The total number of confirmed cases now stands of 20,253.
In Roscommon, the number of cases is now 148.
Of the 20,253 cases, 58 percent were female and 42 percent male. Thirteen percent of the cases (2,669) were hospitalised, of which 355 were admitted to ICU.
Earlier today, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar indicated that the number of people contracting the virus and being treated in hospital was too high for restrictions to be eased on May 5.
A further 31 people diagnosed with COVID-19 have died it was announced this evening, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,190.
Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “We estimate that as of Saturday 25th April 12,222 COVID-19 cases (64%) in the community have recovered. 1,164 cases (6%) have been discharged from hospital which gives us a total recovery rate of 70%.”
