BREAKING: Athlone Town's season opener falls victim to the weather

Athlone Town's players and supporters will have to wait a little longer for their first game of the new SSE Airtricity League season, as their fixture in Galway this evening (Friday) has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

As one of the most miserable weeks of weather for some time persists, the league announced that Galway United's pitch, at Eamon Deacy Park, is waterlogged.

The league stated that a new date for the First Division fixture "will be announced in due course".

The match tonight would have been Adrian Carberry's first league game as manager of his home town club. His former teammate, Athlone man Colin Fortune, is Galway's assistant manager.

Athlone Town are scheduled to play their first home game of the season against Cabinteely next Friday night (February 28).
