Claire Kerrane has been elected to the Dáil in Roscommon/Galway.

Sinn Féin's Kerrane wins final seat in Roscommon/Galway

There were renditions of 'A Nation Once Again' and 'Óró, sé do bheatha bhaile' at the count centre in Roscommon a short time ago, when Sinn Féin's Claire Kerrane was elected to the Dáil.

The schoolteacher from West Roscommon was elected without reaching the quota on the sixth and final count today.

When Denis Naughten's surplus of 3,279 was distributed, Kerrane picked up 463 transfers. Her rival for the seat, outgoing Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy picked up 1,146 transfers from Naughten's surplus, but this wasn't enough to bridge the gap.

As a result, Kerrane finished with 10,545 votes, while Murphy had 9,204 on the last count.

It means that there is no Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael TD in Roscommon/Galway.

The TDs for the constituency are now: Michael Fitzmaurice (Ind), Denis Naughten (Ind) and Claire Kerrane (SF).
