Sport and politics to clash in the Hyde on Sunday
Two sports – GAA and politics – collide this Sunday in Dr Hyde Park as Roscommon take on Clare in the Allianz Football League Division 2, with the general election count taking place in the nearby Dr Hyde Centre on the same site from 9am that morning.
As a result there will no access from the Athlone Road side of the ground for the football match at 2pm, according to Roscommon Gardai. They are advising patrons from South Roscommon to turn left at Hannon's Hotel on the approach into the town and head for the Golf Links Road entrance to Dr Hyde Park.
Sgt Adrian Queeney from Roscommon Garda Station reminded GAA fans who park on the Athlone Road and attempt to gain entry from this side that they will be sent around to the Gold Links Road and face a 20-30 minute walk to get into the ground for the match.
The general election count for the Roscommon/Galway constituency gets underway in Dr Hyde Centre at 9am.
There is expected to be considerable election traffic on the Athlone side of the ground where the entrance to the centre is situated from early morning until the afternoon when the first tallies are expected.
The major winners in both codes will become clearer by teatime!
