Three men arrested in Athlone over social media threats

Three men from the Athlone area have been arrested as part of a Garda investigation into threats to kill and cause serious harm made on social media over the past few days.

One man in his late 40s and two men in their 20s are currently being held at Athlone and Mullingar Garda Stations.

A number of electronic devices and weapons were also seized during Garda searches in Athlone. 

This morning (Thursday), Athlone Gardaí conducted a number of planned searches in the Athlone area, searching for weapons which were displayed in online videos and media devices used in the commission of these crimes.

The search involved Garda resources from Athlone and the Regional Support Unit.

Gardaí in Athlone are liaising with the PSNI in relation to the persons arrested and the social media videos, as they may be connected to a recent serious incident in Co Fermanagh, which is under investigation by the PSNI.
