Rory O'Connor Q&A: Bringing his stories to Athlone
Rory O'Connor, the 'Rory's Stories' funnyman and best-selling author, brings his stage show 'What's the Story, Rory?' to Athlone this weekend.
The show takes place in the Dean Crowe Theatre tomorrow (Saturday, October 19) at 8pm.
'Rory’s Stories' has been an online hit, casting a comedic eye at a variety of aspects of Irish life, from the GAA to the Gardai and everything in between.
Bringing his sketches to life in his stand-up shows, Rory has sold out venues across Ireland, and even as far as Australia and the Middle East.
In March and April of this year, the ‘What’s the Story Rory?‘ show was performed to sold-out audiences in 14 Irish arts theatres.
He performed a debut show in Vicar Street last month and took time out from his current tour to answer these questions for the Westmeath Independent.
The show in Athlone is suitable for over-16s only and tickets are priced €20.

* When was your first comedy gig and how did it go?
It was in Molly's Bar, Ashbourne, in 2014.
At the time I thought it went well, but I saw a video of it recently and it was very bad. But sure, listen, everyone has to start somewhere!
* What's been your most enjoyable performance to date?
Vicar Street. I had it in my 'goals' these past few years and to finally step out there was a surreal experience. Personally I have performed better on stages across the country, I was a bit nervous, but it still went down well and I can't wait to get back there again!
* What was your favourite GAA team of all time and why?
The Meath team of the 90s... hardy, skilful, and ruthless.
* What can the audience expect from the upcoming show in Athlone?
A very relatable night - I talk about a lot of topics that are close to us all, going to school, relationships, social media etc. I have some stories that you couldn't possibly script!
* What is your current state of mind?
I'm really enjoying my life at the minute. I'm very busy both with Rory's Stories and my family, I have no issue in saying that I am living the dream, that's why every day I keep working harder and harder at my craft to make sure I never have to go back to my old 9 to 5 job again!
* Who is your favourite comedian, living or dead?
Jim Carrey, in my opinion the most natural funny man that's ever lived.
* What's the best advice you were ever given?
Channel all your energy towards what you are passionate about. Work hard, don't give up, and you will be successful in this life.
* Name three things you could not live without?
Exercise, chicken stir frys, and good company.
* Last music you listened to and liked?
Luke Kelly, my favourite singer of all time.
* Favourite place in the world to visit?
It's a hard one, but the Fiji islands is up there. Incredibly positive people to be around.
* What are your hopes for the rest of 2019?
Keep improving as a comedian and also keep spreading the positive message on mental health that is ok not to feel ok, and that it's absolutely ok to ask for help.
