Shannon search and rescue operation continuing
The regionaI sub-aqua Search and Recovery Unit has joined forces this morning (Wednesday, October 16) with other emergency agencies to resume a search of the Shannon river in Athlone in response to reports that a person was seen entering the water at approximately 8pm last night near the Strand.
The Athlone Sub-Aqua SAR Unit were alerted to the emergency situation on the Shannon just after 8pm last night and a combined search operation, co-ordinated by MRSC Malin Head Coast Guard, commenced immediately involving the RNLI Lough Ree lifeboat, the Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118 from Sligo and local Gardai.
The combined search continued for a number of hours below the weir wall but was unsuccessful and all boats returned to base via the lough gates which were specially opened for the emergency operation.
This morning (Wednesday) the regional Search and Recovery unit, which is made up of volunteer divers from all the Midland sub-aqua clubs who work and train together in the region, has been activated and are continuing their search operation below the weir wall.
