Swimming star Powell makes the cut for world championships
Athlone swimming ace Robbie Powell has been selected on the Ireland team for the FINA World Championships in South Korea this summer.
Robbie is one of ten athletes on the Irish team for the championships which will take place in Gwangju, South Korea in July of this year.
National Performance Director Jon Rudd has confirmed the selection following their sole selection trials, the Irish Open Swimming Championships in Dublin.
Powell's selection is a very proud moment for Athlone Swimming Club where Robbie showed his prowess in the sport from a young age under the coaching guidance of his father, Johnny. Powell now represents National Centre (Dublin), and is coached by Ben Higson and Steven Beckerleg.
A student at Dublin City University, Robbie is a past-pupil of Coláiste Chiaráin, Athlone (former St Aloysius College).
The Ireland team for South Korea will be spearheaded by 2018 World Championships medallist Shane Ryan.
The Irish team will enter three relays at the Championships. The eight days in Korea is the primary opportunity for nations to qualify their relay teams for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
