Call for CCTV on greenway

A local councillor is to call on Westmeath County Council to install CCTV cameras on a section of the greenway in Athlone.

Cllr John Dolan, who is also Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, has tabled a motion for Monday's meeting of the Athlone Municipal District of the council calling for the move.

The motion reads: “That Athlone Municipal District requests Westmeath County Council to install CCTV on the Greenway from Garrycastle to the White Gates.”

The greenway linking Athlone and Mullingar has been a huge success with significant numbers using the facility to walk or cycle.

However, there have been concerns over anti-social behaviour on sections of the greenway,
