Supermac's owners plan €1.5m hotel upgrade
The new owners of the Athlone Springs Hotel, Pat and Una McDonagh, intend to invest €1.5 million in an upgrade of the hotel over the next twelve months.
The major investment will focus on the leisure facilities, bar, and restaurant areas, as well as a new menu and development of the conference facilities.
The four-star hotel in Monksland went on the market in March 2017, with a guide price of €3.5 million. Mr McDonagh, who started the Supermac's fast food chain in Ballinasloe in 1978, purchased the hotel with his wife earlier this year.
Some of the work at the Athlone Springs has already started and there are also plans to increase the amount of entertainment and events at the hotel.
The hotel is now a member of the Só Hotel Group and Pat McDonagh said the new investment had safeguarded the future of more than 100 jobs for the area.
Mr McDonagh said the staff were one of the hotel's biggest assets. "We are delighted to have retained the wonderful staff who are doing a great job and continue to impress under the leadership of our new General Manager, Lukas Kodl," he commented.
"Their dedication and commitment to improving what we offer at the Athlone Springs Hotel has impressed myself and Una greatly.
"We are working tirelessly to update the hotel facilities and we plan to continue our upgrades into 2019 with a new Bar and other exciting projects that we will be announcing in the coming weeks."
The Athlone Springs Hotel is the fifth addition to the four-star Só Hotel Group, which also includes the Castletroy Park Hotel, the Lough Rea Hotel and Spa, the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise and the Charleville Park in County Cork.
"Things are changing at the Athlone Springs Hotel and we’re excited about what's coming," Mr McDonagh concluded. "We invite you to visit us, if you haven't already done so, and we wish you all the best for the year ahead."
