Ongoing Athlone water outages to continue tonight
Water outages in certain areas of Athlone have become an almost daily occurrence in recent weeks, and the latest supply cut will affect thousands of homes and businesses on the east side of the town tonight (Wednesday).
Irish Water said the latest outage is because the demand for water in the area is currently exceeding supply.
As a result, it said water would be cut off from 10pm tonight in the east side of Athlone town and surrounding areas, as far as Mount Temple.
Irish Water listed the affected areas as follows: The east side of Athlone Town, Baylin, Mount Temple, The Ories, Garrycastle, Dublin Road, Ardnaglug, Fardrum, Moydrum, Blyry, Killyon Hill, Bonavalley, and surrounds.
Water supply to the affected areas is due to return from 6am tomorrow.
"The disruption is due to demand in the network exceeding the quantity of water that is being produced by the water treatment plant," said Irish Water's statement.
"The plant continues to operate at full capacity however, the water level in the Annagh Reservoir continues to fall day on day causing disruptions to supply.
"This action is being taken to ensure that there is an adequate quantity of treated water in the reservoir to supply industries, schools, residences and commercial activities during business hours."
