Storm Callum to make for hazardous morning commute on Friday

People travelling to work and school tomorrow (Friday) morning are being encouraged to prepare for the effects of a storm which will sweep across the country tonight. 

Storm Callum is set to reach the counties of Kerry and Cork from 10pm, and its effects will then spread from the South West. 

Met Eireann has issued orange-level wind warnings for 13 coastal counties, but in the Midlands counties of  Westmeath, Roscommon and Offaly a less severe, yellow-level, warning will be in effect from midnight. 

The warning will be in effect until 9am tomorrow, meaning it could present difficulties for people travelling during the morning hours. 

The yellow warning means gusts of between 90 and 110 km/h are likely in the Midlands. A spell of heavy rain is also forecast, alongside the winds.

The Road Safety Authority is advising road users to "expect the unexpected" and watch out for debris.

Along the coasts, gusts of up to 130km per hour are being forecast, and in Galway a portable dam and flood gates are being installed in Spanish Arch and Salthill to prepare for possible flooding.
