New weather warning from Met Eireann
Met Eireann is forecasting a spell of wet and very windy, possibly stormy, weather on Thursday night and early Friday morning.
The national forecaster this morning issued a Status Orange weather warning for 13 counties.
However, the midlands, including Westmeath, Roscommon, Longford and Offaly, along with a number of other counties is under a Yellow warning.
For this region, Met Eireann says strong winds associated with Storm Callum, coinciding with high spring tides will affect Ireland on Thursday night and Friday morning.
In this area, winds will be strongest overnight and early on Friday, gusting between 90 and 110 km/h at coasts. The yellow warning is from 10pm Thursday to 9am Friday.
For Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry, a Status Orange wind warning is in place from 10pm Thursday to 12noon Friday. Met Eireann says this area could expect wind speeds of 110 and 130 km/h at coasts.
A similar warning is in place for Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath, Cork and Waterford, but from 10pm Thursday to 9am Friday.
For the Athlone region, winds are expected to peak very early on Friday morning, with some rainfall overnight.
The west and north west is likely to bear the brunt with a risk of damaging gusts in those areas, along with the risk of coastal flooding due to high tides and surge.
Met Eireann said later Friday and continuing on Saturday, there is the potential for some high totals of rainfall and flooding with the East and South particularly at risk.
The Athlone area will suffer significant rainfall on Friday night, with squally showers continuing throughout Saturday.
The unsettled weather is set to continue next week, with Met Eireann saying that the early days of next week will see very disturbed conditions.
