Presidential hopefuls to address Roscommon councillors today
A number of presidential hopefuls are set to address councillors in Roscommon this afternoon.
Confirmed to attend the council meeting in the new council headquarters at 2.30pm this afternoon are Patrick Feeney, Senator Joan Freeman, Sean Gallagher, John Groarke, Marie Goretti Moylan and Sarah Louise Mulligan.
Gavin Duffy, who earlier this week secured a nomination from Meath County Council, will not be attending whilst Kevin Sharkey may be in attendance.
Roscommon council will not be voting on whether to nominate a candidate today. However, the council has indicated that nominations from elected members will be accepted this afternoon and a date agreed for a meeting to vote on any nominees.
A candidate requires the nomination of four local authorities to stand in the presidential election
Meanwhile, in Westmeath, independent councillor Michael O'Brien has submitted a motion calling on the Westmeath County Council to nominate Sean Gallagher.
The local authority in Westmeath had heard presentations from candidates last week, prior to the announcement by Gallagher of his decision to seek a nomination.
