Points on the increase for many courses in AIT
The first round CAO offers were issued yesterday (Monday), showing that points had increased for many courses in Athlone IT.
Among the honours degree courses (Level 8) there was a particularly substantial increase in Accounting and Law, which required 377 points at the first round stage this year, compared with 308 points in 2017.
Athlone is now an established hub for multinational pharmacutical companies and the points needed to study Pharmaceutical Science in AIT jumped by 55 - to 312 points - this year.
General Nursing was also up significantly, by 26 points, to 424 this year.
The biggest drop in points among the honours courses in AIT was for microbiology, which required 357 points at the first round stage last year but decreased to 318 points this year.
Of the 19 honours degree courses that were being offered in AIT both this year and last year, points increased in 14 of the courses.
The amount of points required was down in just three courses, while two - Business and Law, and Social Care Practice - remained static.
New honours degree courses in Toxicology and Analytical Science, Hospitality Management, and Applied Psychology are being introduced in AIT this year.
There were first round points changes in 23 ordinary degree or higher certificate courses in AIT this year, with increases in the points required for 13 courses, and decreases in 10.
The points needed to study Mechanical Engineering and Renewable Energy jumped significantly, from 206 points to 252 points this year.
One of the courses which saw a drop in the required points was Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Engineering, which was down to 210 points, from 218 last year.
