Very sad news last evening in Athlone
The death has occurred of Judge Grainne O'Neill (46) from Athlone.
Grainne passed away yesterday, Thursday, peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. Much-loved daughter of Terry O’Neill (Col. Retired) and the late Dr. Urusla (nee Loughnane), she was appointed a district court judge in 2014.
She was educated in University College Galway where she received a Bachelor of Arts (1991) and Bachelor of Law (1995). She qualified as a solicitor in 1999. She has practised in all areas of law, specialising in criminal law, family law, civil litigation and employment law.
From 2000 to 2007, Ms O’Neill worked with the Free Legal Advice Centres providing advice on legal matters, primarily in the areas of family law and civil actions.
The late Grainne O'Neill is survived by her father, brother Olaf, sister Fiona, sister-in-law Christina, brother-in-law Alan, much adored nephews Harry and Simon, relatives, colleagues and large circle of friends.
Her Requiem Mass will take place in St Mary’s Church, Athlone, on Saturday at 12 noon. Reposing of Grainne takes place afterwards at her home. Removal on Sunday morning to Fanore Cemetery (Co. Clare) for burial at 1.30pm approximately. Family flowers only, donations, if desired, to South Westmeath Hospice.
