BREAKING: Job lay offs at Athlone pharma firm

Alkermes has confirmed it is to cut between 25 to 30 jobs at its Athlone plant.

 

Employees were informed of the news today and in a statement tonight the company said the decision was made in light of “changes in our product portfolio, including those as a result of increased generic competition and changes in our research and development strategy.”

 

The pharmaceutical company, based in Monksland, said the decision to reduce staff numbers had been made following a review of its operations and an assessment of alternatives.

 

It’s understood the layoffs will take place before the end of June.

 

“Approximately 25 to 30 employees are expected to be impacted over the coming months.  

 

“We will begin a consultation process with our employees immediately and are committed to working with employees during this period of transition. We anticipate that a reduction in employee numbers will be achieved through compulsory redundancy.”

The company statement said it regretted the impact on employees and the wider community.

 

“Favourable redundancy terms and outplacement services will be provided to affected employees and discussed as part of the consultation process.”

Alkermes said its Athlone facility would continue to play a strategic part in Alkermes’ future business.

It said investment is planned over the next number of years in R&D and commercial manufacturing infrastructure.

The company currently employs 420 people between Athlone and its corporate headquarters in Dublin. The loss of 25-30 jobs would therefore reduce staff levels to under 400.
