Popular Athlone priest being moved to new parish

Well-known local priest Canon Liam Devine is being moved to a new parish in the latest round of appointments in the Diocese of Elphin.

The appointments were announced by the Diocese this morning (Friday).

Canon Devine is being transferred to Loughglynn, in western county Roscommon, where he will be the parish priest. The appointment will come into effect on June 30.

A popular and well-respected community figure, Canon Devine had been living in the Batteries area of Athlone for many years.

He is parish priest in Athlone's parish of Saints Peter and Paul.

Fr Martin Mulvaney, currently parish priest in Croghan, will succeed him as the new parish priest in Athlone.

The Diocese, headed by Bishop Kevin Doran, said it would be announcing further appointments at the beginning of July.
