Fresh revelations in relation to attack that killed Athlone couple
FRESH revelations that emerged this week in relation to a terrorist attack on a Tunisian beach in 2015 will re-open old wounds for relatives of an Athlone couple killed in the massacre, a local priest has said.
Larry and Martina Hayes, who lived at West Lodge, Athlone, were among those killed in the attack.
As hearings into the deaths of 30 UK nationals in the beach massacre opened this week, it was claimed that police deliberately delayed their arrival on the scene of the attack.
Athlone Canon Liam Devine said that while time is a good healer, the fresh revelations are difficult for those left behind.
“This new scenario doesn't help, that lives could have been saved. I can well imagine that that doesn't help. Our thoughts go out to the Hayes family,” said Canon Devine.
“Time is a great healer but it is still very raw,” he added. “There was a great outpouring of support at the time.”
Larry and Martina Hayes and Lorna Carty from Meath were among 38 people killed in the attack on a beach in the Tunisian resort of Sousse on June 26, 2015.
