Padraig Pearses senior football management team revealed
TWO former Roscommon inter-county stars have been added to the management team of Padraig Pearses following the club's recent appointment of clubman Philip Donoghue as senior team manager.
Francie Grehan and John Whyte, who both played for Roscommon in their memorable 2001 Connacht SFC final win against Mayo, have come on-board for the year ahead, along with Ambrose Cuddy.
Ballyforan native Grehan, a former All-Star recipient and Connacht medal winner, has managed his local club St Aidan's in south Roscommon, as well as having a stint in charge of Caulry in Westmeath, with whom he won the Westmeath Intermediate FC in 2014. He has also had a spell as manager of Clara in Offaly. He is a cousin of Donoghue.
Padraig Pearses have never won the Roscommon senior football title but came mighty close in the last two years under the tutelage of Shane Curran, losing consecutive finals against Clann na nGael (2015) and St Brigid's (2016).
With training set to restart for the team in January, manager Donoghue feels that Pearses are ready to go a step further in this year's Championship.
“There's a very good bunch of lads in the panel and we're looking forward to getting back to training in January, and then starting things off with the League in the middle of February. The aim for the year is clear: to win the Roscommon Senior Football Championship,” he said.
But the new Pearses supremo knows that will not be easy.
“At the moment the players are probably still a bit down in the dumps about losing the county final. They've had a couple of knocks in the past two years, in both finals, but they're hungry to get over the line this year and we're hopeful we can do it together. Everyone from last year's panel is on board at the moment and hopefully we will have a very successful year,” said Donoghue, who has managed the club minors and junior team.
