Athlone Gardai issue warning after €2,000 is stolen in email scam
Gardai in Athlone have issued a warning about an online scam after an email purporting to be from the communications company Eir led to a local person having €2,000 fraudulently taken from their bank account.
A report about the incident was made to the Gardai on Wednesday of this week.
The local person who was affected said they had received an email, pretending to be from Eir, which asked for bank card details to process payments correctly.
The person gave their details and €2,000 was taken out of their account on the same day.
The bank contacted the person and the email was confirmed to be bogus.
Gardai in Athlone are asking the public to be very cautious in giving out account information. They stressed that no legitimate company will ask for bank account details by email or phone.
