ST VINCENT'S UPDATE: Hospice to remain open for the moment
It's understood the South Westmeath Hospice facility, which adjoins St Vincent's Care Centre in Athlone, will remain open for the moment.
Concern had arisen last night on whether the hospice would be forced to also close, following the shock news that 35 patients are being transferred from St Vincent's to facilitate emergency works on the electrical system.
There are no issues with the electrical system in the hospice and it's understood this morning that the hospice will remain open for the moment.
A decision will have to be made in the coming days as to whether it is feasible for the hospice to continue to remain open while work is ongoing on the major electrical refurbishment in St Vincent's hospital.
Issues surrounding noise levels, health and safety and disruption will have to be considered.
It's believed no major construction work will take place in St Vincent's for another month.
A statement is expected from South Westmeath Hospice on the issue today.
