Athlone Town names caretaker management team for Cobh clash

Athlone Town FC has today announced that Colin Fortune and Mick Dolan will take charge of the team for the home fixture against Cobh Ramblers tomorrow (Friday) night, following the recent departure of Alan Mathews as manager.

Meanwhile, concerned members of the club have called a Members Emergency General Meeting of the club to be held in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel this evening (Thursday) at 8pm.

According to a press notice issued on Monday, the sole purpose of the Emergency Meeting on Thursday 'is to propose a vote of no confidence in the current committee of Athlone Town AFC'.

Those initiating the Emergency Meeting called on 'all current members to attend this important meeting'.

In an update on players which was posted on the Athlone Town FC website today, the club said 'a number of players' left the club in recent weeks and on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week 'the club have signed players and have forwarded their details to the FAI for registration purposes'.

The statement said www.athlonetownfc.ie was 'not aware of the names of the players who will be making up the squad, but will be receiving the player list officially when confirmed players are received back from FAI hopefully later today'.

It also said Under-19 players who are 'ready for the step up to senior football' would be added to the matchday squad.

The club is currently the subject an independent interim review, ordered by the FAI. Peter McLoone, former general secretary of IMPACT trade union and ex-chairman of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions’ Public Services Committee, was appointed to conduct the review into the current situation at Athlone Town.
