Woman stole 20 jerseys from Athlone sports shop

A brazen shoplifter walked out of a sports shop in Athlone with 20 jerseys last weekend.

Sergeant Michelle Baker said the offence - and a separate theft from a ladies’ fashion store - was carried out by “a lone female” on the afternoon of Sunday, June 5.

In one incident, the shoplifter stole nine items from a ladies’ shop in the Athlone Towncentre. She then went to a sports store in the Golden Island Shopping Centre to carry out the second offence.

Sergeant Baker said the shop was particularly busy at the time and that the woman took advantage by walking out with approximately 20 jerseys, which had a total value of some €1200.

Both incidents took place between the hours of 3pm and 5pm on June 5. Gardai have been making enquiries in relation to the two thefts.
