Governement planned pay-by-weight bin charges abolished
The pay-by-weight charges for green bin waste, due to come into force on July 1, have been cancelled.
The government was to introduce a mandatory minimum charge of 11c per kg for black bin waste, 6c for brown bin and 2c for green bin.
The Department of the Environment announced that the minimum charge for green bin waste will be removed from the new regulations.
However, private waste companies have yet to announce details of their pay-by-weight charges, and could individually charge for green bin waste.
The charges were opposed by Fianna Fail, Sinn Fein, the Green Party and People Before Profit/Anti-Austerity Alliance as they claimed the charges would increase illegal dumping and reduce recycling.
