Temperatures to fall to -1 across the midlands tonight!

As we approach the May Bank Holiday weekend, Cathal Nolan of the Midlands Weather Channel warns of a dramatic fall in temperatures during the course of this evening and overnight.

'Temperatures are again expected to fall away across the Midlands with many areas seeing temperatures as low as freezing or -1 degrees Celsius.

'Given that many roads across the midlands are currently wet, icy stretches may well become an issue on any untreated surfaces sheltered from the wind.

'Heavy showers will continue overnight, especially in northern and western areas of the midlands where some will be wintry and may even fall as sleet or snow. This will only add to the already difficult driving conditions.'

Met Eireann says Friday will also be a cold day, but bright with sunny spells and showers of rain or hail. These will become widespread and heavy in the afternoon.

Again temperatures will drop to -1 in places tomorrow night.

Saturday is to be bright and sunny with some scattered showers. Highest temperatures 9 to 11 degrees. Saturday night will see a band of heavy rain move eastwards across the country.

Sunday will start off cloudy with outbreaks of rain but will brighten up throughout the day. It will be noticeably milder with highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees and moderate westerly breezes.

Through Sunday night, another band of rain will cross the country. It will clear eastwards on Monday morning with showers following for the rest of the day, some heavy. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees with fresh, gusty westerly winds.

The weather will continue unsettled through the middle part of next week with rain or showers at times
