Local clubs in the hunt for Westmeath U21 Football title

The semi-finals of the Westmeath U-21 football championship take place this Sunday - with Moate All Whites, Caulry and Castledaly/Rosemount all involved in the last four.

Moate host neighbours Caulry in what promises to be an intriguing local derby at Hogan Park, while the Castledaly/Rosemount combination are away to Shandonagh. Both semi-finals are listed to start at 11.30 on Sunday (see this weekend’s fixtures below).

There will be plenty of players who have represented Westmeath at minor and U21 level on show in the semi-finals which should serve up entertaining action.

There was some confusion earlier in this year’s U21 championship with Moate’s clash with Athlone listed as a quarter-final in the fixtures on a couple of occasions. As it turned out, that game was a second round which Moate won, before defeating The Downs 2-11 to 1-6 in the quarter-finals last weekend. Ruairi Cunningham and Billy Berry scored their goals, with Cunningham’s strike a brilliant score.

Other key players on the Moate team include Rob Gorman, John Corbally, Gavin Murray, Jamie Madden, Eoghan Kelly and Robbie Forde. Moate won the Westmeath minor football title with the same group of players three years ago and will now fancy their chances of going all the way at U21 level.

However, Caulry will be hoping to cause an upset on Sunday and will be looking for big displays from the likes of Eoin Fox, Sean Pettit, David Brookes, Robbie Hickey and Paddy Sleator. Caulry had a comprehensive 1-17 to 0-7 win over Millmore Gaels (Milltown & Ballymore) in the quarter-finals last Monday week, having defeated Garrycastle earlier in the campaign.

Castledaly/Rosemount overcame St Loman’s 4-12 to 4-8 in their quarter-final last Friday evening with Castledaly’s Lorcan Dolan netting three goals for the winners. Boidu Sayeh, Darren King, Andy McCormack and Cathal Daly are among the Rosemount players on the team.

Elsewhere, Westmeath senior football champions St Loman’s Mullingar will travel to Aughrim on Sunday to take on Rathnew in the quarter-finals of the Leinster club SFC.

Luke Dempsey’s charges, who defeated Castledaly in the Westmeath final, had a bye into the Leinster quarter-finals, while Rathnew defeated Offaly champions Edenderry in the opening round.
