Devaney found guilty of manslaughter

Jimmy Devaney has been found not guilty of the murder of Marie Greene, but guilty of her manslaughter, at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin this afternoon.
A jury of five men and six women returned the verdict after deliberations that lasted for four hours and 23 minutes.
Jimmy Devaney (67), of Millbrook Avenue, Monksland, Athlone, had pleaded not guilty to the murder of Marie Greene at Tullycross, Moydrum, Athlone, on February 13, 2011.
A jury of six men and six women were sworn in to hear the case on Monday, July 13.
At lunchtime on Tuesday, Ms Justice Margaret Heneghan, who was presiding over the case, told the jury she had discharged one, male, juror.
The hearing of evidence in the case took a total of five days and was interspersed with legal argument. Closing statements in the trial were heard Tuesday and Wednesday and Ms Justice Heneghan then addressed the jury before they retired to consider their verdict at 3.03pm on Wednesday.
Ms Justice Heneghan thanked the jury and said it hadn't been an easy case. She excused them from jury service for a period of 15 years.

Counsel for Mr Devaney said there was no objection to a remand in custody until the sentencing hearing, which was set for Monday, November 2.

Mr Devaney was then remanded in custody until that date.
